Song I Would Have In My Opening Credits

Written By: Chinarose Riley

You know how in certain movies from the late 2000s to the mid 2010s there would be a montage of the main protagonist having an extreme makeover from nerd to all of a sudden, the most attractive person alive? This is the scene I picture when hearing Rina Sawayama’s song “Comme Des Garcons (Like The Boys)”.

This single is from the 2020 album SAWAYAMA, where Rina Sawayama takes genre-bending to a new level. With this confidence boosting bop, she expresses how women deserve to have just as big an ego and confidence as our male counterparts.

Being fearless in who you are and wearing your confidence on your sleeve, just as obnoxiously as men do (hence the translation “Like the Boys.”

With this song ringing in my ears, the only movie scenes I can picture are when the protagonist is trying on various outfits in front of friends seeing what sticks. Trying different hairstyles, makeup, perfume, almost anything over the top you can think of when it comes to cliche transitions.

With lyrics like “You should never be ashamed to have it all,” and the repetitive “I’m so confident,” and many more uplifting lyrics, you cannot interpret it any other way aside from being comfortable with being confident.

What are your thoughts on the song?
