Have you ever had a friend ditch you for a toxic relationship? Introducing “Guy’s Girl” by upcoming pop punk indie artist Alemeda. “Guy’s Girl” is a relatable friendship break-up anthem for anyone who has lost a friendship over a guy or anyone a friend has left them for a partner. Alemeda perfectly depicts the feeling of disappointment and frustration of breaking up with a friend over the effects of an overlapping toxic relationship. Here is a lyric breakdown of the song:
“I should've known 'cause you're a guy's girl
That you would do this to meHe'll give you nothin', take you nowhere
And you still wouldn't leave.”
This first set of lyrics and the song's chorus tone. Alemeda comes to the realization that her friend will always be a “guy’s girl” since she will always choose him no matter what even though Alemeda has her best interest. This is the peak of Alemeda starting to realize that her friend will choose him no matter the circumstances. Moving to the first verse.
“When you crashed my Honda, I didn't complain
I didn't hold it against you, didn't tell you to pay
All 'cause I loved you, I pushed it over like it was nothin'”
I didn't call you a bitch, I didn't scream in your face
I didn't make you feel shitty like the guys that you dated
You'll never learn, he'll never change, neither will you”
Alemeda brings up a scenario of when she was patient with her friend from crashing her car to dating terrible men free of judgement. Alemeda uses these examples to emphasize how she has done much more for her as a friend than her partner has ever. Being strung along and having her kindness taken for weakness, Alemeda is fed up and tired she is of hearing her friend continuously getting hurt by prioritizing men over their friendship. Displaying her loyalty as a friend, it seems like a slap in the face as she comes to this realization.
Slowly getting more frustrated with her friend’s choices through the song the chorus repeats. This time the chorus sounds much louder than at the beginning of the song, except the tone is not anger, but disappointment. Moving on to the second verse.
“I realized that you'll never change
You'll always go back and choose him
Girl, I think that shit's lame (oh)
He lies to you (he lies to you)
And you lie for him (you lie for him)
Then you call me cryin' (you call me cryin')”
In these first set of lyrics in the second first is when Alemeda is starting to register in her mind that no matter how many times her friend has been hurt by the same person, she will always go back to him. The tone switches from disappointment to annoyance when Alemeda recalls once her friend was hurt, that they will come back to her calling her about the situation and looking for a shoulder to cry on. The last part of the verse shows Alemeda’s patience running thin and how the cycle will continue if she does not remove herself from this friendship. Moving to the second part of the verse.
“We used to talk about how we would always be friends
And no matter what happened, it'd be us in the end
You'll never learn, he'll never change, neither will you”
We see another tone shift back to disappointment as Alemeda reminisces on the highlights of their friendship. Recalling conversations about how they would never let anything come between them and how they would be friends until the “end.” Only for it to be discarded for someone who does not care for them in the slightest. Alemeda is coming to understand that the person who is friend is falling for would never change, and neither would she.
The end of the song repeats the chorus two more times fully circling back to feeling of disappointment and frustration Alemeda started to show in the beginning of the song.
