Meet Mia Lailani, a 21-year-old Puerto Rican singer-songwriter from the Bronx, New York. This up-and-coming R&B pop singer has been making music since she was 10 years old and continues to make nostalgic feel-good tracks all about self-love, growth, and her perspective on modern dating. With her brother and producer, Devan Ibiza, they blend R&B, pop, and hip-hop to craft fresh, playful beats that translate into songs you have on repeat.

Her latest single and music video, “SUBSTANCE,” explores her take on modern dating and how she’s grown to become more self-assured. What sets Mia Lailani apart is her visual storytelling in her nostalgic music videos, her Gen Z take on the Y2K aesthetic, and her bright, optimistic, & hopeful personality.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Mia on her latest single, her inspirations, her growth, and what’s to come next.

GRRRL Music: Tell me about your latest song and music video, “SUBSTANCE”?

Mia Lailani: It’s cheeky, fun, very cute, and all about having standards for the right person. I made the video last Spring and was inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough” video. We used a green screen, and it was very DIY.

GM: Do you have any musical inspirations?

ML: I grew up with music at home all the time, artists like Bee Gees, Sade, Aaliyah... and I listen to Doechii and admire her work ethic, and artists like Steve Lacy as well.

GM: How come the Y2K style?

ML: I feel like it represents me and how I’ve grown into myself as a woman and have learned to know more about myself. I love the colors and the overall aesthetic and vibes that come from Y2K.

GM: How have you grown since you started making music when you were 10?

ML: I feel like I’ve grown in my lyrical content, especially as a teenager. I used a lot of inspiration from growing up; I’ve been inspired by TV shows and movies as well.

GM: Any plans for your music in the next year?

ML: My latest single, “SUBSTANCE”, is part of my upcoming album “Mia Mia”, my first album in 5 years since my last in 2021, which I released when I was 16. This album will be bringing it back to me and how I’ve grown and, overall, the woman I’m becoming.

GM: What is something you’d like to let your fans or new fans know?

ML: There’s so much more in store for us, and with the latest album, it will be a great introduction for new fans to listen to my music. I also have a Christmas song in the works to be released soon, in time for the season.

As we ended our conversation, I couldn’t help but think how refreshing and kind Mia truly is and how she’s the kind of artist everyone should listen to when they want to unwind and reflect on the good in life.

This is only the beginning for Mia, and she plans to continue developing new sounds and creating songs that come from her real experiences and allow fans to connect and understand their growing pains.
